Bricklaying, Repointing & Masonry

Here at Cailes builders we are experts in all things brick and mortar, from the smallest of repairs to entire homes. We can complete any project. Find out more below.

Bricklaying

There are only 5 steps to bricklaying once everything is in place:

1. Lay a bed of mortar
2. Add mortar to end of a brick
3. Place the brick firmly into the bed
4. Scrape away the excess mortar
5. Check the levels

Seems simple, but the trick is consistency. Our teams can lay thousands of bricks per day, all within perfect level and plumb lines. We can lay bricks for any structure, from steps and small garden walls to huge retaining walls. We also can create interior walls either load bearing or not.

Repointing

Repointing brickwork is the process of carefully repacking the mortar sitting between the individual bricks/ blocks of the structure in question. It may be seen as a simple task in renovation or construction, however, not all structures are equal. Some are at great heights and structural walls have different standards. If you are unsure, call a professional.

Repointing work is most commonly found in areas with lots of wind and rain, since the weather slowly wears down the mortar inbetween the joints. Places that are exposed to more of the elements will need more frequent care, like chimneys and large exposed walls on the side of houses.

Masonry

This is a very broad term. Masons are many things all in one. They need to have keen eyes for symmetry, especially when working with natural materials like stone and wood. These materials, unless shaped, are very ununiform and irregular. Building sound structures from such materials takes extra calculations and care.

Modern masons retain these ancient skills but use the most recent technology when needed. This includes structural steel for lintels in order to support areas such as doors, windows, and building openings which is taking all of the weight from the structure above.
